How I work

The supervision relationship offers the opportunity for a dedicated discovery process, exploring the nature and quality of your work and its impact on you.

This is facilitated through the attention to some of the following themes:

  • An ‘experience of safety’ is relational, being a ‘safe person’ does not create safety in and of itself. Together we will explore the practices and skills to facilitate this co-creation.

  • Identifying any effects/impacts and working to attend to these effectively.

  • Discussion of client or work place interactions; exploring stuck points, dilemmas and challenges, in order to identify effective practices and interventions.

  • Connection and disconnection - navigating a path that allows the practitioner to be present in their work life, while practicing protective strategies (particular to the practitioner and discovered through the sessions).

  • Awareness of how the work is ‘meeting’ ones own story, particularly in relation to historical or current trauma/abuse.

  • Identifying unhelpful work life patterns which undermine capacity and wellness and exploring new ways forward

Information for Agencies

Clarification of role, structure and content when delivering Group/Team sessions for agencies:

  • Sessions will focus on issues brought by practitioners. It may include case material, particular themes in the work and context and the impact of this on them. I am bound by the BASW/AASW Code of Ethics, ensuring any identifying information regarding clients or staff or the agency, is held in the strictest confidence.

  • The content of the session is confidential. The exception will be if I develop concerns relating to the safety or welfare of any client, colleague or other person.

  • If, in the course of the session, I have any serious concerns in relation to the welfare of a client, colleague or the workplace, it is agreed that I am expected to assess how best to deal with that concern. Strategies may include:

    • discussion in the first instance with the relevant Practitioner, if necessary next steps may include:

    • with the practitioners knowledge, and where possible involvement, discussion with the relevant line manager in the agency concerned.

  • As this is an agreement for external supervision/reflective practice, my role is that of a Consultant and I therefor have no direct supervisory accountability.
